ProQuip, the world’s leading innovator of lightweight golf weatherwear and Preferred Supplier to the European Ryder Cup Team 2010, has introduced lined water repellent knitwear, giving golfers extra winter warmth, comfort and weather protection.
There are two garments in the new range – the soft, fine Merino Lined Zip Neck and a classic Lambswool Lined Zip Neck, using 100% premium quality British lambswool.
Both products feature a lightweight lining (taken from ProQuip’s Ultralite Tour rain suit) that is breathable for both warmth and comfort, and is also super-soft for quietness during the swing.
As with all ProQuip performance knitwear, the luxury Italian spun Merino and 2/17Nm British lambswool (New metric – two pieces of fine quality yarn twisted together) are pre-treated with a water repellent finish that results in light rain beading off the surface.
The quality of the wool used in both garments offers exceptional comfort, strength and stretch, enabling golfers to carry their bags without the fear of pilling on the shoulders.
All ProQuip knitwear is Total Easy Care meaning they are machine washable and tumble dryer friendly. In fact, tumble drying and a warm press after washing positively enhances water repellency.
“Lined sweaters have been around for many years, but ProQuip’s Lined Water Repellent Knitwear is unique in terms of the quality of the yarn used,” said ProQuip Managing Director, Richard Head.
“This is knitwear of the highest quality with the addition of a distinct technical edge and performance benefit. The soft, breathable lining offers the golfer warmth and comfort, while the water repellency enables either product to be worn as an outer layer in most weather. It is the ultimate winter knitwear.”
How ProQuip makes water repellent knitwear
The long Merino fibres are coated with a fluorocarbon (Fluropel OWS) to create a long polymer chain. The fluorine atoms on the polymer chain are so close together when they are perpendicular to the carbon chain that it is impossible for water droplets to pass through. If the fluorine atoms are disturbed, which they are over time and wear, then water can then pass through the polymer coating. However, ironing or tumble-drying the garment re-aligns the fluorine to be perpendicular so that water repellency is restored.
